Environmental Risk Assessment
Problem Formulation
What needs to be protected from harm?
We are a factory emitting harmful chemicals and pollutants and we want to protect a nearby community from acquiring health risks. We are also doing some renovations or demolitions.

What are the possible effects?
- Asbestos-related lung diseases such as asbestosis - mesothelioma - laryngeal effects

Control Measures
What measures will you take to reduce the risk? Who is responsible for what?
- Remove any asbestos-containing materials safely - Conduct regular inspections of the site - Perform air monitoring and keep records. - Complete regular assessments of asbestos risks. - Communicate asbestos hazards to workers. - Use proper work practices and controls to limit exposures. - Offer respiratory protection if exposure limits are exceeded. - Provide asbestos awareness training.

Control Measures
What measures will you take to reduce the risk? Who is responsible for what?
1. Dispose all toxic wastes properly. 2. Keep the amount of toxic material in storage as small as possible. 3. For larger containers such as drums or barrels, provide dikes around the storage area and sills or ramps at door openings. 4. Storage tanks are above ground and surrounded with a dike capable of holding entire contents.

Noise and Vibration

What are the possible effects?
- cause hearing loss - annoy and interfere with speech - interfere with concentration and thought processes - disturb sleep - cause fatigue and aggression - reduce immune response - lead to heart disease

Control Measures
What measures will you take to reduce the risk? Who is responsible for what?
- Separate the noisy area from other workspaces. - enclosure of noisy machinery with sound-absorbing material (effect may be limited unless total enclosure is achieved) - avoiding metal-to-metal contact by using plastic bumpers - using absorbent lining on surfaces to cushion the fall or impact of objects - fitting sound-absorbing materials to hard reflective surfaces - using conveyor belts rather than rollers - using acoustical silencers in intake and exhaust systems - using rubber mounts to isolate vibrating noise source to separate it from the surface it’s mounted to - maintaining optimum speed of machinery or its particular components - repairing and replacing loose rotating parts, worn bearings and gears - using sound-absorbing material on walls, ceiling and floors to reduce the noise level due to reverberation - undertaking regular maintenance on equipment (very effective in reducing noise emission if carried out regularly). https://www.iosh.co.uk/Books-and-resources/Our-OH-toolkit/Noise/Noise-control-measures.aspx
